Gov. DeSantis’ proposed changes to congressional districts take direct aim at South Florida’s two best-known Democratic lawmakers, U.S. Reps. Jared Moskowitz and Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
The new map follows the demands of President Donald Trump who wanted GOP-led states to help make sure Republicans retain a majority in the U.S. House.
For months, DeSantis has predicted that the U.S. Supreme Court would force redistricting in a ruling in the Louisiana v. Callais case that could eliminate federal requirements to protect majority-minority districts. However, no decision has been published, and some predict none will be until it’s clear that the 2026 Midterms will not be affected.
The last time Florida Democrats led Republicans among all registered voters was in 2020. Republicans had been gaining on Democrats for years, taking the lead in 2021 and not relinquishing it since. While registered Democrats outnumbered registered Republicans in 2020,
